Bibliography
Van Allsburg, C. (1981). Jumanji. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co.
Summary
After their parents leave for the opera, Judy and Peter go to the park where they find a game under a tree. Taking it home, they decide to play the game but don’t read all of the instructions. After the first roll, Judy and Peter realize there is much more to the game than they originally thought.
My Impressions
I watched the movie years before I read the book. Having watched the movie first, I never would have believed it was derived from a picture book. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is entertaining although I think the resolution happens too quickly.

Golden Archer Primary Award Winner from the Wisconsin Educational Media Association 1996
Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award 1984
Kentucky Bluegrass Award from Ohio State Library 1983
Caldecott Medal 1982
Boston Globe Horn Book Award for illustration 1982
Suggested Activities
For students within either a public or school library, the librarian, or other library staff could lead the kids in creating their own games after listening to this story. Jumanji is a great book to spark a child’s imagination. For instance, the librarian or other staff member could ask the listeners what type of game they would make, who would be the players, and how the game would be played.
